Alvi, Moniza
(1954- )
   Born in Lahore, Pakistan-her parents moved to England when she was an infant-she grew up in Hertfordshire and was educated at the universities of York and London. After a long career as a secondary school teacher, she now tutors for the Open College of the Arts and lives in London with her husband and daughter. In 2002 she received a Cholmondeley Award for her poetry. Her poetry publications: Peacock Luggage, 1992 (with Peter Daniels). The Country at My Shoulder, 1993 (short listed for the T.S. Eliot Prize and Whitbread Poetry Award, which led to her being selected for the Poetry Society's New Generation Poets promotion). Some of her publications: A Bowl of Warm Air, 1996. Carrying My Wife, 2000. Souls, 2002. How the Stone Found its Voice, 2005 (inspired by Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories [see entry]). Some of her poems: "And If," "Backgrounds," "Grand Hotel," "Presents from My Aunts in Pakistan," "The Wedding," "Throwing Out My Father's Dictionary."
